stress to K1 at rest. Finally, the first-pass studies used by Jerosch-Herold’s team have yielded impressive results when compared with coronary flow reserve measurements using Doppler wires (2). In truth, the best comparison would be to compare the nutritive perfusion measurements obtained with positron emission tomography (PET), because coronary flow reserve and regional nutritive perfusion can differ. Nevertheless, although technically demanding, their firstpass technique looks promising, particularly if the imaging artefact problems are overcome and validation against PET can be achieved. The Kety model approach needs further research, but it may prove to have some advantages for the reasons already outlined.

Race-ethnic differences in the extent, prevalence, and progression of coronary calcium.

OBJECTIVE To compare across four race-ethnic groups the baseline prevalence and extent of coronary calcium and the 7-year rate of progression in the extent of coronary calcium. DESIGN The South Bay Heart Watch is a prospective cohort study designed to appraise the value of coronary calcium for predicting cardiovascular outcomes in asymptomatic adults with cardiac risk factors. Statistical ana...

Prevalence and correlates of coronary calcification in black and white young adults: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

Whereas cardiovascular risk factor levels are substantially different in black and white Americans, the relative rates of cardiovascular disease in the 2 groups are not always consistent with these differences. To compare the prevalence of coronary calcification, an indicator of coronary atherosclerosis, in young adult blacks and whites, we performed electron-beam computed tomography of the hea...

Acculturation and socioeconomic position as predictors of coronary calcification in a multiethnic sample.

BACKGROUND Coronary calcium has recently emerged as a marker of subclinical coronary heart disease. Although there has been much interest in race differences in calcification, heterogeneity within race or ethnic groups has not been investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS Data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a population-based study of coronary calcification, were used to inve...

The Paradox of Health Policy: Revealing the True Colours of This ‘Chameleon Concept’; Comment on “The Politics and Analytics of Health Policy”

Health policy has been termed a ‘chameleon concept’, referring to its ability to take on different forms of disciplinarity as well as different roles and functions. This paper extends Paton’s analysis by exploring the paradox of health policy as a field of academic inquiry—sitting across many of the boundaries of social science but also marginalised by them. It situates contemporary approaches ...

Atherosclerosis Burden in Patients with Acute Chest Pain: Obesity Paradox

Obesity paradox has been described in various populations of coronary artery disease, mainly asymptomatic subjects. However, relationship between obesity and coronary artery calcification detected by cardiac CT in symptomatic patients has rarely been demonstrated. This study seeks to investigate whether the paradoxical relationship between obesity and coronary artery calcification exists in pat...
